Boston final edition

May 7, 2009

The Boston Globe, one of America’s leading newspapers, well known for its coverage of national and international news, as well as city and state news, is on the verge of being wound up after a dispute between its owner and the workforce.  So anyday now could see the final edition, although local Senators Ted Kennedy and John Kerry have joined others in trying to broker a deal to save it.  Many local and regional newspapers in the UK are facing a similar threat of being wound up.   It is interesting to see the Evening Standard launching a ‘we’re sorry’ campaign to convince readers that they have changed.  One of the main complaints is relentless negativity, running things down.   Local newspapers should take heed, especially in these cold times, when people will get fed up of endless bad news.
