LGiU: 95 per cent of councils planning to share services

October 26, 2010

The LGiU has realeased new polling showing that an overwhelming 95% of council leaders are planning to share services. You can read a full report on the Channel 4 CutsCheck Blog. LGiU Director Jonathan Carr-West commented that:

“It’s encouraging to see that virtually all councils recognise the scale of the challenge that faces them and the need for radical organisational change and sharing services. However, given that councils have been making efficiencies for years, even as other government departments have grown, it’s hard to imagine that many authorities will be able to reduce their budget by 27 per cent without some reduction in services. For a lot of councils, the hard choice will be between doing everything less well and choosing to stop doing some things to maintain standards in others. Communities must be involved in these tough choices.”
